installing abiword on web host

Hello

I'm still trying to install abiword on my webhost as a tool for
converting documents. I am installing from source. I do not have root
access on the server, so I am installing with the ./configure
--prefix=/home/codepres option. The install fails and says it needs
pkg-config. I installed the most recent version pkg-config, which comes
with glib-1.2.8 The install fails again, saying that it cannot find
glib 2.0 in pkg-config . Why does it ask for pkg-config if it does not
have the right version of glib?
