enchant is provided by debian as libenchant, and it is set up on my system.
How could I use this when I compile Abiword without having to compile enchant from source ?

Enchant is a separate library, available on abisource.com, that is required to build AbiWord. It will let you use a number of spell checking engines, including aspell.
