Yes, this is an open secret. The developers that brought abiword for
OSX so far are mostly off to other things.
That said, there have been reports of people running the gtk-based
("Linux") version on OSX using X11. A variant that does not require an
X-Server may become feasible in the future, as a byproduct of internal
improvements. While not as well integrated you'd get a maintained
codebase.
