Thanks Ryan - turns out it was my fault *whince*
So, the problem was, I was putting Word docs in my webserver doc root
/var/www. I had turned on Indexes so I could browse the files I had
created, but unfortunately, the permissions on the directories Abiword
was creating were missing "world read" - so something like 751 instead
of 755. Probably a umask problem.
Anyway, once I 755'd the output directories, the images appeared -
they had been there the whole time, Apache just didn't have permission
to serve them. When I googled the problem, I came across ancient
threads where people really did have a problem with exporting images,
especially with Word 2003 documents. Combined with the libgsf error I
was getting, you can see how I jumped to the wrong conclusion.
So, mystery solved - hopefully the above will someday act as a "check
the power cord" for somebody with a similar lapse of common sense :)
Thanks again,
-- Jim
