Saving changes to ~/.AbiSuite/templates/normal.awt does not work

Hi,

I am trying to make Abiword 2.6.3 on FreeBSD 7.1 understand 2 simple
things :

1) I want the default font to be Bitstream Vera Sans, regular, size 12
instead of that disgusting Times New Roman
2) I want my language to be english (GB) instead of english (US)

I have tried everything possible, including :

1) Changing the system-wide normal.awt under /usr/local/ ..... /templates/
2) Creating my own customised normal.awt in ~/.AbiSuite/templates/
3) Editing ~/.AbiSuite/AbiWord.Profile by hand
4) Praying to God

None of the above works, and the internet does not offer any help beyond
what I have already tried.

Can somebody please tell me some sure-shot method of achieving what
currently appears to be beyond human reach ? Interestingly, the
application appears quite willing to accommodate other defaults that I
wanted to modify : no ruler, size in cm, save as rtf.

Any help (apart from redirecting me to some internet search engine)
would be cherished forever.
