I find that I can reproduce the problem with Abi 2.6.6, WinXPPro SP3.

I used Thomas' example. Now after I had created a hyperlink, I hovered
the mouse over it and saw the name of the *truncated* link appear at the
bottom of the Abiword window.
I selected/right clicked the link to edit and saw the truncated link in
the edit box.
When I pasted the given URL into the Insert Hyperlink dialog box it was
still intact.
However, it looks like it that the text following the accented character
vanishes after one hits OK and so closes the Insert Hyperlink dialog box.
