Handling of LANGUAGE environment variable

Hi,

I tried to use Abiword (on a Xubuntu 8.10) while setting the LANGUAGE
environment variable to get the interface in the desired language.

Unfortunately, it seems that abiword only acknowledge LANG, but not
LANGUAGE.

This is pretty annoying as LANG can only be set for a *single* language,
without any failback, as LANGUAGE can be. This means that if the LANG is
not found (or only partially translated), it's defaulted in C (english),
which is not what I would (I would prefer french as default). I can
easily do: export LANGUAGE=de:fr
but LANG cannot accept this syntax.

Is there any solution?

Thanks,

        Yannick
