Request for elementary information on startup defaults

Hi all,

I installed AbiWord yesterday on FreeBSD-7.1 after tolerating - and
finally giving up on - the *Office suites of Unix. AbiWord seems to be
definitely better, but - despite whatever information I could go through
- I can't get it to do a few simple, elementary things :

1) I want the default font to be Bitstream Vera Sans (regular, 12
points), rather than Times New Roman. Saving this change in normal.awt
seems to have no effect. The next time AbiWord starts up, the font is
again autotragically set to Times New Roman.

2) I want the default dictionary to English (GB) and not English (US).
Saving this change to normal.awt fails again.

3) I want AbiWord to start either maximised or in the state it was last
closed in. I have no idea how to do this. AbiWord always seems bent on
choosing its window size and position at startup even if the user is
religiously praying for the inverse.

Can somebody please provide me any hints on how to achieve the above ?
