Have you tried

Tools > Preferences > Spelling

and checked the appropriate boxes?

I found that Abiword detected and linked to my system language on
installation. I am using Vista Home Premium with an Australian English
dictionary.

OpenOffice is best (and free, of course) but is a very big download,
although I am told you can often find it on CDs that come with computer
magazines. Abiword has limitations but is useful for straightforward stuff.

Good luck
Adam
