Hi Melanie.

The Smart Quotes feature was properly fixed in the development version
(2.7.x), which will eventually be released as version 2.8.

So, one option at this time would be to try the 2.7 version. In my
experience it's been quite stable. The other option would be to wait for
th 2.8 release. My impression is that it's coming "soon".
