I've heard this called things like "screen dirt". You're correct that
it's simply a visual error, and not really affecting your document. It's
considered a bug in the program, and the developers typically try to
stop it from happening if they can figure out what's wrong.
A couple questions to help clarify the cause:
* What operating system are you using? (Windows XP, Mac OS X, some
variant of Linux, etc?)
* What version of AbiWord are you using? (2.6.something, etc.)
* Does this happen all the time, or just randomly?
