Cursor Eats Letters Like Pacman

When I try to move text to the right by placing the cursor in front of it and hitting the spacebar the text doesn't move. Instead it remains stationary and the cursor "eats" the letters like Pacman, it deletes them.

This also happens when I correct a misspelled word by clicking the cursor into the word and typing the missing letter. Instead of the other letters moving to the right they remain there and get replaced by the letter(s) I type.

Also,the cursor is red. I think it was black before this problem started.
