Hi JP,
        AbiWord is already being used for exactly that purpose. One of
our core developers (uwog@uwog.net) has implemented this for his
company betterbe.com.

Contact them if you're interested in licensing some of their
solutions. (They already embed images in docs on the fly for sales
reps as they speak to customers. It's real-time solution.)
