Though I use Abiword all the time, it's been ages since I've altered
the default font. It's described completely in the online help page in
case you want details on various options for changing the default
font. The following used to work as a quick and dirty method, provided
you're using Linux (in future it will expedite getting help if you
specify what version of Abiword you're using, whether it's Windows or
Linux). If you're on Linux, try this:

1. As root, open the directory /usr/share/abiword-2.9/templates
(assuming you're running the 2.9 version of Abiword, but you're version
may be different)

2. Click on the file "normal.awt" (this will open Abiword using the
"normal" template, the one holding all your system-wide Abiword
settings)

3. Change the font to whatever font you like. Click "save" and close
Abiword.

4. Open Abiword from your regular menu executable and your chosen
font should now be default.

The help files (take a look at these at the Abiword site) describe
changing the default to user-specific rather than system-wide. That's
an alternative you might like better.

Good luck.
