The problem is that AbiWord's layout engine does not yet support
tables at all. We definitely want AbiWord to have this important
feature, but we don't have a firm schedule for when it will happen.

The obscure feature you are recalling is probably "AutoSummarize".

Using the MSWordView tables code won't help very much, since that code
mostly just converts things to HTML. The underlying problem will
remain until AbiWord itself has the ability to format things in
tables.
