Ok...
The "generic" package that i downloaded with the new irix.mk file, compiled
ok. However, at the linking stage, I got an error:
Linking static
/tommy.1/people/bob/dev/abiword074/abi-0.7.4/src/IRIX_6.5_IP22_OBJ/bin/AbiWord_s
ld32: FATAL 9: I/O error (/usr/lib32/mips3/nonshared/crt1.o): No such file
or directory
Now, I am running Irix 6.5.4 with the latest developer goodies installed. I
am also running GCC 2.8.1 as well.
(Shaw, you might see about trying GCC 2.8.1 on your irix machine... go to
http://freeware.sgi.com All of the lastest freeware packages are
available, pre-compiled, and easy to install on any SGI box. That is where I
get most of my IRIX stuff)
I do know that I can compile a "dynamically linked" version of abiword, I
just have to remember how I did it..
there was a change in the irix.mk file....
I'll post the change when I am able to figure it out..

Makefiles don't do them right for any Unix platform. :)
I'll fix those shortly. If you install libpng and zlib (http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png/ and
http://www.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/zlib/ respectively) to your system
and then start the build, things should work themselves out...--
