TrueType vs. Type1 (was: Russian language support in AbiWord)

Hi!

Apropos, I've noticed that AbiWord gets SEGV when I enter _any_ cyrillic
letter (I use XKB, _NOT_ XModmap)
XFree86 3.3.2.3
FreeBSD 3.0-some old snapshot

Question to AbiWord developers: why not to use TrueType fonts instead of Type1?
(or together with them)
The main benefit of TrueType is good support for Unicode (most modern fonts
have builtin character map for Unicode already).
I use FreeType (http://www.freetype.org) for text rendering and can recomend
it as an _extremely_ good piece of code.
Using client-side rendering, I need not TrueType font server installed,
need not anything but only fonts.

The problems known are:
(1) Patent problems: see http://www.freetype.org/patents.htm
(2) There are thousands of free TrueType fonts around, but only few of them
has good hinting code.
(3) There are few fonts where most of Unicode glyphs are presented
(in fact, the only such font I know is Bitstream Cyberbit, which is non-free
and is not a good font for on-screen rendering due to serifs)
