do you think on font servers?
As far as I understand, they cannot support antialiasing. Well (may be, many
of us could live without screen, especially if we could get good printouts),
but this solution is absolutely universal. This is its main feature. I am
really not an expert in unix programming (including X fonts and PS), so I
cannot imagine all the difficulties related to printing from xfs but I hope
they are not mortal. Who can say anything concrete on this? It would be very
useful for all us...
The only impression about speed of font servers is from my own Linux box. My
X does not use any fonts excepts xfs's ones. In fact, it is still enough
fast (I could not notice the difference when I changed configuration from
local fonts to font server). My configuration is rather week (for today):
P-166MMX, 64M RAM, S3Trio64V2/DX. So I think, font rendering is not the
bottleneck here.
