Solaris/Sparc package: no characters

I tried to install the pkg for solaris: but when I run it I
got a dozen or so of warnings "shmat failed", and then no character
appears in the window, just small red waves (curiously, strikeout and
underscore do work!)
My understanding is that the font directory is not present/not searched.
Any idea?
