Using a hash file for another language

I asked in another message how to disable spell-checking. Someone
pointed to me in private email that the american.hash was used.

I figured maybe this was an ispell like file, so I replaced it with my
francais.hash, and, yes! I have French language spell check.

Well, almost. It works, except that every word with accentuated
characters (like "éditeur", that's editor) is underlined as a mistake.

Why is that ? Can I correct it ? Can you ?
