The strong point about Visual C++ is that is IDE is a very nice and productive
environment to debug problems on Win32. We are very few developers on Win32
and loosing the ability to debug with a productive environment will be a step
backwards in my opinion.

I'm working on the Unicode port and I cannot image working on this and
debugging all the issues on Win32 without an IDE like Visual Studio.
