You didn't do anything wrong. It looks like this problem is font related.
Somehow, AbiWord cannot create fonts for the menu items. Try running
AbiWord from an xterm and there is likely to be a useful error message
shown. Post that back to this list, and someone more knowledgeable about
unix fonts than I might be able to give you a hand.
