I have found seven bugs for this problem (square
characters at end of lines containing tabs):
4183 "Save/reload puts spurious characters in
simple file in 1.0.3". Main bug.
4118 "Errors in document after opening". Marked
as duplicate of 4183.
4202 "Simple line entered and saved - wrong
display when reloaded". Noted as possible
duplicate of 4183. Marked as fixed in CVS-HEAD.
4210 "Text rendered as squares". Marked as
duplicate of 4183.
4212 "Phantom Text appears after loading file with
custom tab settings". Marked as duplicate of
4183.
4249 "abiword adds some extra bytes at the end of
line". Marked as duplicate of 4183.
4590 "squares appear in text on screen and printer
after reopening document with tabs". Noted by
Alan Horkan above.
The bug is thought to be in the bidirectional text
code. The bug seems to be fixed (for me, on
Win98SE) in the latest CVS-HEAD build. However,
using the CVS-HEAD build is only for the brave. I
am not using it myself and I don't recommend it.
The bug is on the Release Hackdown for 1.0.5, so
we can expect that the fix will be included in the
next mainstream release.
If you only write in left-to-right languages, I
recommend you use either 1.0.2 non-bidirectional
(dated 5 June 2002), or the CVS-STABLE non-
bidirectional build (dated 23 January 2003, kindly
provided by Jeremy Davis). Both are available for
download from my rudimentary homepage:

In the AbiWord Weekly News that announced 1.0.2,
Tomas Frydrych (the main bidirectional-text
developer) provided an interesting article on the
complexity of BiDi:
