I hope I neither said that, nor implied it -- nor anything like it.

One great virtue of gmane over a normal subscription, to those of us
without any ambition to become real technoids, is that it facilitates
skimming for things we *might* understand and benefit from -- without
having to ask the same old Very Dumb Questions that those of you who know
things have seen umptillion times. For one thing, it's one way we can
learn enough of what you call things to become able even to ask.

Btw, I did try your initial advice to the OP, and set a filter to killfile
posts to the list -- it went against the grain, but I did it. Just for the
record, I now have to sit and twiddle my thumbs (on broadband, with a fast
machine) every time I open that account, because my mailer always has to
do its auto-deleting first.

That is a lesser evil than before : I don't have to worry (or at least, I
think I don't) about quota overruns any time I'm offline for days. But
it's still a lot more bothersome than an account set to nomail, and
interaction entirely through gmane. And this is the only list on gmane
that fails to let me do that. (I would file a bug report, if I knew how; I
hope someone who does, will.)

I hope that doesn't sound ungrateful; I'm very glad to have AbiWord, on
the rare and brief occasions I need it -- and my wife, who's working on a
serious writing project, is even gladder. We *like* lean apps. Many
heartfelt thanks to all developers of Abiword!
