I looked but strangely couldn't find a bug report about native JPEG
support and I would have sworn there was an ancient bug report about the
issue. (Does that mean it has been fixed or I just cannot find it?)

It still sounds like an issue with Gnome print, the fact that it happens
with both Abiword and Evince is a strong indicator.
Go to bugzilla if you want to file a bug report against gnome-print:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=gnome-print
Gimp uses a different printing system called Gutenprint - formerly known
as gimp-print - which explains why you got successful results using it.
