Tab Settings

Is there some way I can create tab settings which will remain in place
while I edit a document?

When I open a document, I can create a tab setting and move the first line
of the document to that setting. When I drop down to the next line, the
tab setting I've created disappears, and I must create a new one for that
line.

How do I avoid this problem with a document that is already in existence?
