disappearing curser

Hi,
I have installed Abiword on a friends machine running Ubuntu Dapper,
(766processor, 256 ram )
(plugged his box into my isp and downloaded from repository) Tonight I
received a call from him that the curser had turned into a blinking spot
a few pixels in diameter. Nothing will type on page. I can't see what he
may have done, so am unable to fix his problem. He did install some new
truetype fonts, I removed them and ran fc-cache -f -v . Open office is
still working (very slow). Am I missing something basic?
Any suggestions most welcome. Thanks in advance.
