Fontconfig will substitute a font that looks similar to times new roman.
I believe the URW clone of Adobe Times.
If you get an rtf file from someone in a font you don't have - the same
thing happens, you can see the font they used as your chosen font, but
can choose it yourself (and the text you are seeing is a substitute).
You can edit the rtf and send it back to them, and the parts you edited
will be in the font they used - even though you don't have it.
Since AbiWord defaults to Times New Roman - even though the font isn't
really there, you still see it as the chosen font.
