The largely empty pages issue will be fixed in version 2.8, due out
"soon". I'm quite familiar with that bug. I agree, it's a frustrating
one.

Sorry that Abiword didn't work well for you. Hopefully you'll find it
useful for other purposes!

(I'm not sure if it's helpful for you right now, but there is a TeX
export feature in Abiword too.)
