"it would surpise me if you really wanted to write an entire document in
bold face" commented Alan.
I use reading glasses and I've been writing all my text in bold for two or
three years now to reduce eye strain and I would never go back to regular
:).

I use both Abiword and Netscape Composer (it's a wysiwyg webpage editor) to
compose text. When I open a new Composer file I instruct Composer to show
the source code for editing and I add the following code near the top and at
the bottom of the body code:
<span style="font-weight: bold;">
</span style="font-weight: bold;">
Maybe there's a similar code that can be added to Abiword files (opening
them in Notepad or similar program to add the code) rather than fiddling
around with the normal.awt file? (I know nothing about Abiword code).
Cheers,
Ed.
